Adult's biological meaning means an animal that is capable of reproduction. The term "adult" is often employed in relation to human beings to refer to moral and social concepts. Contrary to the concept of a non-adult or "minor" an legal adult has reached the age of majority. They are considered an independent, self-sufficient person and dependable. Also known as "majors", they can also be said to be at the age of majority. The age when a child becomes an adult legally is 18 years old, however the definition of"legal maturity" is different based on the legal or country system as well as the state of their mental health.

The age of adulthood marks the point in the human lifespan when an individual has reached maturation in both mental and physical development. Commonly, adulthood begins around the age of 21, or 20. Middle age starts at around 40 years and is followed by the older age of around 60. As we grow older, there are three distinct phases early adulthood (18-30 years) middle adulthood (30-60 year olds) and finally, late adulthood (60%-60 60%). It is the time of physical maturation that we are at when we turn 20 to 40 years older. Our height and weight are likely to increase. In young adulthood our physical capabilities are at their best which includes muscle strength, reaction time, sensory abilities, and the functioning of our heart.
